When and how to use this calculator

On a C$1,000 taxable Ontario sale quoted before tax, add 13% HST (C$130) for a C$1,130 total. If C$1,130 already includes HST, divide by 1.13 first to find the C$1,000 pre-tax price.

  1. Determine whether the supply is taxable, zero-rated or exempt. The type of supply affects the tax, not just the customer's province.
  2. Determine the correct place of supply before selecting a CRA GST/HST rate: 5%, 13%, 14%, 15%, or zero-rated 0%. Do not treat 0% as an exemption without verifying GST registration rules.
  3. Select whether the number you enter is tax-exclusive or tax-inclusive, and separately account for provincial PST or QST where applicable.
