When and how to use this calculator

On $10,000 of combined credit limits, a $4,200 reported balance is 42%. Bringing the reported balance to $3,000 would require a $1,200 reduction to reach a chosen 30% ratio.

  1. Add the LIMITS of the revolving accounts you want to analyse. Credit limits are not the same as available credit or cash in your bank.
  2. Add the balances reported or expected to be reported. If your bank updates at statement closing, a payment made later may not appear immediately.
  3. Set a percentage target based on your own budget and compare the resulting cash repayment with what you can afford. Avoid interest or fees by checking your actual statements.

Understand your result

The input assumes reported revolving credit balances and corresponding credit limits. It does not estimate FICO, VantageScore, report timing, interest, or account-specific scoring differences.

Questions people ask

Will lowering utilization automatically raise my credit score?

No single percentage guarantees any score change. Reporting dates, model, late payments and credit history also matter.

Is 30% a legal maximum?

No. It is a commonly discussed benchmark, not a bank rule, borrowing limit or guarantee.

Does available credit include instalment loans?

The illustrative formula is designed for revolving lines such as credit cards. Car and student loans are different credit products.
