How to calculate Indian income tax for 2026–27

  1. 01

Enter your TAXABLE income after eligible deductions or exemptions. Do not enter gross CTC: this simple model does not automatically deduct your salary standard deduction.

  2. 02

Keep resident status selected only if you qualify for a resident individual Section 87A rebate. The rebate is not available to non-residents.

  3. 03

Check slab tax, Section 87A rebate or marginal relief just above ₹12 lakh, then the 4% Health & Education Cess. The model uses ordinary new-regime income only.

  4. 04

Verify special-rate income, salary deductions, exemptions, tax credits and surcharge rules separately before making financial or filing decisions.

What is included and excluded

Restricted-scope estimate for tax year 2026–27, new regime, ordinary slab-rate income only. The input is taxable income after all eligible deductions. Valid up to ₹50 lakh only; higher amounts require surcharge handling not implemented. This tool does not handle capital gains, lottery or other special-rate income, foreign income, business-specific adjustments, TDS or assessment-specific rounding. Consult a qualified adviser for filing.

Frequently asked questions

Is all income below ₹12 lakh automatically tax-free?

The resident Section 87A rebate can reduce tax on qualifying ordinary slab-rate income up to the threshold; special-rate income is not covered. This input must be taxable income, not gross salary.

What happens if taxable income just exceeds ₹12 lakh?

Marginal relief may limit the tax before cess so that a small increase in taxable income does not create a disproportionately large tax bill.

Does the calculator include TDS or the old tax regime?

No. It is a new-regime annual liability estimate only. TDS, deductions, special-rate income and comparison with the old regime are outside the current model.

IN-DEPTH CALCULATOR GUIDE

A practical guide to India's 2026–27 new-regime tax estimate

This calculator is for a resident or non-resident individual who already knows taxable ordinary slab-rate income. It is most useful for exploring the 2026–27 new tax regime, checking a rough income-tax liability and understanding the resident Section 87A rebate. It is not a salary CTC-to-tax converter.

01

Tax year, taxable income and gross CTC are different

Tax year (TY) 2026–27 is the twelve-month income period beginning in April 2026. A salary package or CTC can include employer benefits and contributions that are not the same as an individual's total taxable income.

Calculate eligible exemptions and deductions before using this input. In particular, the calculator does not automatically subtract the permitted standard deduction for eligible salary income. If you enter gross salary directly, it may overstate taxable income and tax.

02

How the slab rates and rebate work

Under the 2026–27 new-regime ordinary slabs, the first ₹4,00,000 is taxed at zero; higher slices progress through 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and 30%. Each rate applies only to income within that slice, not the whole figure.

For a qualifying resident individual's ordinary taxable income of ₹12,00,000, the slab calculation gives ₹60,000 tax before rebate. The Section 87A rebate can offset that amount. Just above ₹12 lakh, marginal relief can limit an otherwise abrupt increase. The 4% Health and Education Cess is calculated after relevant rebate relief.

03

Step-by-step worked scenario

First select 'resident' only if you qualify for the individual rebate and enter ₹12,00,000 taxable income. Check that the displayed rebate is ₹60,000 and final estimated tax is zero. Next change to ₹12,10,000: the calculator applies the marginal-relief mechanism to a normal slab-rate scenario, so do not assume the next ₹10,000 simply produces an ordinary 15% incremental bill.

If you select non-resident, the personal Section 87A rebate is removed. This side-by-side test demonstrates why tax residency affects the outcome even when taxable ordinary income is identical.

04

What this estimate leaves out

Income taxable at special rates, including certain capital gains, is not eligible for the same rebate treatment. The page cannot determine TDS already withheld, refund eligibility, surcharge, tax credits, agricultural income adjustments, deductions or business provisions.

For filing, confirm the relevant Tax Year versus Assessment Year in official Income Tax Department guidance. Use the prescribed return forms and tax computation; do not treat a calculated amount as a final assessment or payment instruction.

Educational planning only. Verify relevant official records and lender or tax documents before making decisions.
